Anthropocene Ethics:
نویسنده
چکیده
The International Geosphere Biosphere Program has recently suggested that we now live in a new era of natural history, the Anthropocene, one marked by the emergence of a new series of geological, biological and climatological forcing mechanisms in the biosphere. These new forcing agents are changing the composition of trace gases in the atmosphere, moving large amounts of material all over the planet, drastically curtailing, and in many cases, eliminating habitats and their species. The ethical challenge now for global environmental politics, and especially for international relations specialists thinking about these themes, is to work within such a frame of reference. In this sense at least "environment" has been superceded. The most pressing ethical matters in the shadow of the Kyoto protocol, and recent events in the so called 'Middle East' relate the political questions of who "we" now are, and how we might usefully know how "we" might change our identities, and our actions, in light of the sheer scale of recent anthropogenically induced changes within the biosphere.

Towards an Animal Ethics for the Anthropocene 1
The complex problems of wildlife conservation during the current stage of the Anthropocene – the ‘Great Acceleration’ – are forcing us to develop an alternative to the traditional (utilitarian und deontological) approaches within animal ethics. I will put forward Martha Nussbaum’s capability approach as a promising alternative to these traditional approaches, with the proviso that the current v...
متن کاملGeography and the Anthropocene II: Current contributions
This and two companion papers (The Anthropocene and Geography I: The back story and The Anthropocene and Geography III: Future Directions) consider the relevance of 'the Anthropocene' to present and future research in Geography. Along with the concept of 'planetary boundaries', the idea that humanity has entered a new geological epoch of its own making is currently attracting considerable atten...
متن کاملPalaeontological evidence for defining the Anthropocene
Palaeontology formed the basis for defining most of the geological eras, periods, epochs and ages that are commonly recognized. By the same token, the Anthropocene can be defined by diverse palaeontological criteria, in accordance with commonly accepted biostratigraphic practice. The most useful Anthropocene biostratigraphic zones will be assemblage and abundance zones based on mixes of native ...
متن کاملDown to Earth: Planetary Health and Biophilosophy in the Symbiocene Epoch
Advances in science have illuminated the role of the “ecological theatre”—the total living environment—in human health. In a rapidly changing epoch known as the anthropocene, microbiome science is identifying functional connections between all life, both seen and unseen. Rather than an easily identifiable era appearing in rock strata, the anthropocene is more of a diagnostic syndrome, a set of ...
متن کاملInstitutional Theory and the Natural Environment : Research in ( and on ) the Anthropocene Andrew
This review article summarizes the main tenets of institutional theory as they apply to the topic of the Anthropocene in the domain of organization and the natural environment. But our review is distinctive for two reasons: First, it is focused on providing avenues researching the Anthropocene Era. Second, while based on the trajectory of current, accumulated theory and research, our review is ...
